FAQ
Why katakana and not kanji?
Foreign names are officially written in katakana — the script Japanese uses for non-Japanese words. Kanji versions are decorative ateji, which we cover in our Name in Kanji tool.
Is this how Japanese people would actually write my name?
Yes — verified names use the readings found in Japanese media and name dictionaries, not letter-by-letter guesses. When we haven't verified a name, we say so with an “Estimated” badge.
