Why katakana and not kanji?
Foreign names are officially written in katakana, the script Japanese uses for non-Japanese words. Kanji versions are decorative ateji, which we cover in our Name in Kanji tool.
Is this how Japanese people would actually write my name?
Yes. Verified names use the readings found in Japanese media and name dictionaries, not letter-by-letter guesses. When we haven't verified a name, we say so with an “Estimated” badge.
