Class, Classroom, Student Council: the 10 Words of Every School Anime

Published 2026-07-31

School anime is the beginner's genre — not because the stories are simple, but because its vocabulary is where anime and your textbook finally agree. The top words in 4,249 lines of school-life dialogue are 授業じゅぎょう (class) and 教室きょうしつ (classroom) — first-year textbook words, running at anime frequency — with 生徒会せいとかい (student council) right behind them.

Here is the top 10, plus what each one carries in the genre — clubs, festivals, transfer students and all.

Where do these rankings come from?

Word frequency is counted across 4,249 subtitle lines classified into this genre from JESC, an open research corpus of 2.8 million Japanese TV & film subtitle lines (Pryzant et al. 2018, CC BY-SA 4.0).

The map only lists words that already have a reviewed entry in our library — a frequent word you expect may still be in production, and each new set extends the map.

A few entries are compound words counted under their core component (a student-council compound under its base word, for example), so a count can occasionally sit slightly above the entry ranked before it.

Counts tied to specific franchise titles are excluded or adjusted, and the corpus predates 2018 — so the newest slang of a genre can rank lower than it feels like it should.

The top 10, one by one

#1授業じゅぎょうN4

class / lesson · 1,109× in this dialogue set

Class — the lesson itself. 授業中じゅぎょうちゅう (during class) is where half the genre's whispered conversations happen.

#2教室きょうしつN5

classroom · 588× in this dialogue set

The classroom — the genre's main stage. Built from the kanji of 教えるおしえる (to teach) plus “room”; the same pattern gives you 職員室しょくいんしつ (the teachers' room).

#3生徒会せいとかいN2

student council · 400× in this dialogue set

The student council — in fiction, a shadow government; in real schools, a committee. Either way, 生徒会長せいとかいちょう (its president, #6) is a character archetype of its own.

#4制服せいふくN3

uniform (school or work) · 452× in this dialogue set

The uniform — school or work. A whole trope on screen, and everyday Japanese at any workplace with a dress code.

#5宿題しゅくだいN5

homework · 402× in this dialogue set

Homework — the eternal enemy. 宿題やった?しゅくだいやった? (“Did you do the homework?”) might be the most realistic line in all of anime.

#6生徒会長せいとかいちょうN2

student council president · 208× in this dialogue set

The student council president — half politician, half idol. A compound of #3 and 会長かいちょう (chairperson), a title you will meet again in business Japanese.

#7放課後ほうかごN2

after school (hours) · 219× in this dialogue set

After school — literally “after lessons are released” — the golden hours where the genre actually happens. A word with no exact English equivalent and a whole atmosphere attached.

#8転校生てんこうせいN2

transfer student · 196× in this dialogue set

The transfer student — the plot device that walks in mid-semester. 転校するてんこうする = to change schools.

#9部活ぶかつN2

school club activities · 194× in this dialogue set

Club activities — short for 部活動ぶかつどう, the word that organizes Japanese school life. 部活、何入ってるの?ぶかつ、なにはいってるの? (“What club are you in?”) is the standard getting-to-know-you question.

#10同級生どうきゅうせいN2

classmate (same school year) · 177× in this dialogue set

Classmate — same year, same grade. Contrast with 先輩せんぱい (upperclassman) and 後輩こうはい (underclassman) — the seniority axis that structures every relationship in the genre.
